WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
I like to encourage everyone to be able to swim. Some people prefer just their swim suit, others a wetsuit or various layers for warmth, and some will be happiest in their swimming-wetsuit for maximum efficiency &/or warmth in the water.
I find goggles, a bright coloured silicone swim hat and ear plugs (recommended) hugely improve your experience with Front Crawl swimming.
Please bring a tow float if you are taking part in an Adventure Swim or Explorers Retreat day. You’ll also need a towel and dry clothes, and a beanie hat in the colder months for afterwards.
WHICH LEVEL IS BEST SUITED FOR ME?
You know your swimming competency best. Take a look at the info on the Sessions & Pricing page which outlines which session is best for what. If you are still unsure, please do not hesitate to contact me.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST / I CAN’T AFFORD IT, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?
Swimming in the open water should be accessible to all. I offer one-off sessions, blocks of 3, or more. I do do 1:1 sessions or if there is a group with similar aims and goals we can tailor a group session too. Priced per session & to suit all budgets, please get in touch.
I LOVE THE WATER BUT I’M SCARED OF THE SEA/SEAWEED/SHARKS/WAVES/BEING OUT OF MY DEPTH, ETC
It’s natural to have fears / worries / anxieties about the unknown. Jaws didn’t do anyone any favours – you are not going to see a shark!
By building up your Open Water confidence and learning how to manage any panic when in the water, you can overcome any worries and really begin to enjoy the open water, reaping all it’s benefits to your physical and mental wellbeing. In all my sessions we acknowledge any worries swimmers might have and look at techniques we can adopt to assist with them.
WHERE DO YOU GO?
Most of the sessions take place in the Falmouth Bay area of Cornwall. It is a perfect safe, sheltered swimming area that offers so much scope for sticking near the shore or taking a longer distance. Weather & Tides occasionally mean another spot might be a better option. We are spoilt for options in the vicinity of Falmouth/Helford/St Mawes for your exploring adventures!
WHY OPEN WATER SWIMMING?
The benefits of cold water swimming are continually being researched, but it is now clear that the cold effect on the body is multi-faceted with proof of extensive benefits to physical, mental and emotional well-being, as well as as the perfect tool for mindfulness taking you out of your mind and into your body. It is a unique/individual experience, it can be a social experience or a meditative solitary one, it can be about cold therapy or fitness or wellbeing, or all of the above and more. For all, it is a profound & powerful feeling that very few regret. For more information search Dr Susanna Soberg ‘Winter Swimming’
I’VE NOT DONE YOGA BEFORE, IS THAT OK?
Of course! All yoga classes offered on the retreat days will be suited to all levels. I ask you let me know any medical conditions that might impact your practise but we can offer modifications and adjustments to cater to all. Part of the practise of yoga is building an awareness, listening to your own body & practising at a level that suits you on the day. The classes will combine yoga-based stretches suitable for swimming fitness, breath-work to bring calm & focus and mindful meditation for intention and inner peace.
