I’ve got into the habit of wearing a silicone swim hat every time I go into the sea, even times when I don’t plan to submerge my head.
My first response to ‘why’ was that it is easier to warm up if you don’t get your hair too wet, but on reflection I’ve realised I do it for many more reasons.
Swim caps for Swimming in Open Water, are great for keeping your hair tucked out the way – reducing any unwanted drag, they help secure your ear plugs keeping your ears drier, and they do keep your head a bit warmer – working as a great barrier on the forehead against brain-freeze when you are swimming front crawl. So, they are very practical additions to your kit list.
Not only this, they are brilliant for visibility, making you safer in the water, other water users can spot you more easily in a bright coloured swim cap. In the instance that you get into danger or end up off course you will be easier to spot with a bright coloured hat. In race or event conditions swimmers are usually wearing the same coloured hat to make it easier for the safety teams and event officials to keep track of numbers and maintain safety.
